  • What were the main teachings of transcendentalism? What were the roles of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau in the movement? If you were alive then, do you think you would have joined the movement? Why or why not.
The main teachings of transcendentalism were to teach to live the simplest way possible with no materialistic objects.
The role of Ralph Waldo Emerson was the writer and the thinker who argued that Americans should disregard institutions and follow their own beliefs.
Margaret Fuller's job was editing the famous transcendentalist publication "The Dial".
Henry David Thoreau advised even stronger self'-reliance and simple living away from society. He wrote his book "Walden" after he lived for two years at Walden Pond.
If I was alive then I think that I would have participated in this movement because it might have not led to SO much technology spreading that it can even take over the world.

  • What is a Utopian community? What was one utopian community established in the United States? Why did they last only a short time? Do you think a utopian society is possible in America today- explain why or why not?
A utopian community is groups of people who tried to form a perfect society.
One utopian community established in the U.S was at Brook Farm, Massachusetts, in the1840's.
They only lasted a short time because you can never form a perfect society, there will always be something wrong.
I do not think that a utopian society is possible in America today because there is so much more technology now then there was back then.

  • Why were Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickenson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Walt Whitman important American authors and poets at that time? Explain each person role. Which person do you find most inspiring and why?
Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Walt Withman were all important American authors and pets at this time because they joined the Romantic movement.
Romanticism involved a great interest in nature, an emphasis on individual expression and a rejection of many established rules.
Each person was either a writer or poet and wrote something that contributed to this movement.
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "The Scarlet Letter" during that period. Poet, Edgar Allen Poe became famous for his poem called "The Raven". Other many talented poets included Emily Dickison, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Walt Withman. Each of them wrote very popular poems.

  • What ideas did the artists in the Romantic movement express? Why was the Romantic movement important to American culture in the 1800s and today? Explain.
The ideas that the artist in the Romantic movement expressed great interest in nature, an emphasis on individual expression, and a rejection of many established rules.
American Romantic artists were inspired by ideas about, simple life, nature, and spirituality.
The Romantic movement was important to American culture in the 1800s because it made mnay improvements on society. The Romantic movement is important today because it has had a great impact on the community.

  2. Dear Valery (Not entirely sure who wrote this),
For the question, "What were the main teachings of transcendentalism? What were the roles of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau in the movement? If you were alive then, do you think you would have joined the movement? Why or why not. " I don't think that people supporting this more would have led to less technology being used. As it says in this link, transcendentalism was (and still is) a 'green' or 'environmental' project. Meaning that it's about nature. So, wouldn't they just want everyone to live simply and not completely want people to stop evolving. As technology is a way that we have evolved as a whole, as a species.
    Sincerely, Shelsy

  4. Dear Valery (not sure),
I disagree with how you stated that you believe that a utopian community could be created now. I don't think that there is such a thing as a 'perfect' individual or place and to find multiple of those would be very difficult. Also, it depends on your opinion of 'perfect' because I don't think any community could be described as perfect. For example, lets say that I prefer cities but to someone who doesn't prefer cities, then it wouldn't be that perfect (this is just one of the many). Also, I don't think that a community could be 'perfect' because of the amount of technology. I don't think that the amount of technology has anything to do with a utopian community. Nor do I think it could be accomplished ever. This link shows other 'utopian communities' and why they had failed.
    Sincerely, Shelsy

  5. Hello Valery,
I agree with you, if I were alive back then I would have joined the movement because it's better to live life without having a lot of stress being put onto you. And having technology is a major problem because, people rely on technology so much they can't live without it. (Link is a graph showing how technology keeps increasing as years pass by; https://singularityhub.com/2016/03/22/technology-feels-like-its-accelerating-because-it-actually-is/#sm.00000x4tz5cftsdgvrv633r0a0g5w)
    Thank You, Jeffrey

  7. Dear Valery,
I agree with you for thinking that a Utopian Society can not exist in America today. There are countless issues we face in America today that I can not even begin to express my concerns about. We have issues such as suicide bombing, mass shootings/no gun control, inequality between sexes and races, police brutality, minimum wages, poverty, and just so much more. How are we able to maintain a perfect community if the people apart of it aren't "perfect" either ? Link explains why the idea of a Utopian Society failed; https://www.tomorrowsworld.org/magazines/2006/november.../why-has-utopia-failed

  8. Hi Valery,
In question 2, I agree with you stating that a utopian society can not exist in America today and how technology today can cause this, but, I do believe that there are some positives to it. Here's a link that explains the positives and negatives to technology and how it affects society.

  10. hello valery,
I totally agree with you when you say that there can be no perfect society because today we have Donald Trump as our president, and he has problems that affect us and everyday there must be some type of problem.
